Congratulations! You Successfully Wrapped the First Week of School!

IT’S A WRAP! From our newest kindergartners to our most experienced sixth graders, everyone helped make this one of our best first weeks ever. Congratulations!
As usual, we’re kicking off the new school year with non-stop action. Read the newsletter below, review the calendar, and follow us on social media to stay up-to-date on all the school happenings.

 Get to Know Your PTO
Do you know who volunteers on the PTO Board? You can find all of their names and emails on the PTO website. To help you get to know your Board Members better, we’ll periodically “introduce” an officer or chairperson in this newsletter.

ALISON FEINBERG, PTO PRESIDENT

Alison Feinberg is our 2017-2019 PTO President. She has three children, Nora an 8th grader at Desert Shadows Middle School, Sadie in 6th and Josh in 3rd grade.

5 Things to Know About Alison
  • Alison loves Goodreads and if you “friend” her, you’ll find over 550 books on her shelf, 403 of which she’s already finished.
  • Alison obviously loves reading, so it’s no surprise one of her favorite SSKY events is the book-fair. But, did you know she is a self proclaimed auction addict? Cantina Night is her other favorite school event.
  • Alison loves show-tunes, piano bars, yoga, reusable grocery bags, shoes, roses, and Disneyland.
  • Alison does not like doing the dishes (who does?!?), grocery shopping, running errands, egregiously long road trips, running, math, or reptiles.
  • She is counting down the days until the Outlander premier. (Only 30 more!)

If you see her in the hallways or out at the flagpole, be sure to say “hi!” or feel free to email her at president@sskypto.com

Classroom Support Funds v. Team Thunderbird

Do you know the difference between Classroom Support Funds and the voluntary donation to Team Thunderbird?
Totally simplified, Classroom Support Funds are requested by your child’s teacher for your child’s classroom and grade level.  Contributing to CSF supports activities that advance the curriculum and enhances teachers’ lesson plans. Teachers make lesson plans assuming the majority of families will contribute, but if teachers do not have enough funds in their CSF, planned activities will be cut. Some of the CSF money ($16) is also given to Room Parents to use for teacher appreciation and $5 is given to specials teachers to support their classroom activities.

Donating to Team Thunderbird supports the entire school. It is the PTO’s main source of funding for school-wide events, programs, and supplies. Without sufficient school-wide funding, the PTO would need to scale back or eliminate things that the District does not fund, like Reading Eggs, Brain Pop, Wonderland, lessons with Mrs. Klein, Art Walk, STEM Night, Artists in Residence, and even professional development classes and extra paper for the workroom!

Both are absolutely essential funding programs that support your child’s education. We encourage all who are able to donate to both today!

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action).

Create a great offer by adding words like “free” “personalized” “complimentary” or “customized.” A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like “for a limited time only” or “only 7 remaining!”
