FAQs for New to School Families
*These FAQs and their answers are based on the pre-Covid world :) For 2020-2021, things may be different and we will be flexible. :)
What is PVOnline and what is PVConnect?
These are the two options available starting August 5th. The best place to find details regarding classes is the District or the official school website. But, here is a brief description.
PVConnect is a synchronous model that will be taught by Sonoran Sky teachers. This is the default option for all students enrolled at Sonoran Sky. You do not need to do anything to enroll in this learning option. This model is designed to look like a condensed school day. Students will be expected to login at various points during the day.
In PVConnect morning announcements will start at 8:45am for all students. They will then proceed through three main blocks of instruction. These blocks will consist of Math, ELA, and Science/Social Studies. There will then be a shared lunch time followed by a large block of flex-time in the afternoon. This block can be used to work on assignments independently as well as for teachers to provide additional support. Students will receive daily Specials instruction (Art, Music, STEM, Computers) as well as a weekly SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) lesson. PE mini-lessons will be provided daily to keep kids up, active, and moving. Click here to see a sample schedule of a SSKY PVConnect week. Keep in mind this is a sample to give you an idea of what to expect. Individual schedules will vary by grade and student.
PVOnline is an asynchronous model that is designed to be more flexible for families and students who might have a challenge making the synchronous model work with their schedules. You need to take action to sign-up for PVOnline if you want to choose this learning option. Assignments are posted weekly and students are expected to login to get their work. Students do most of the work independently then submit assignments electronically when completed. There are times teachers are available for “office hours” style support, but this program is mainly based on independent work.
PVOnline is considered a separate PV school. If you enroll in PVOnline you will not be instructed by Sonoran Sky teachers. If you enroll in PVOnline and choose to return to Sonoran Sky at some point in the future, you will not lose your spot at our school (even if you are open-enrolled). You can find out more about PVOnline by clicking here.
What time does school start and end? (The following is our regular in-person schedule. For PVConnect or PVOnline schedules, please refer to emails from Mr. Dawson and your classroom teacher.)
School Daily Schedule for regular in person classes
Normal classroom hours: 8:45am – 3:15pm, the front office is normally open from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
Early Release Classroom hours: 8:45am – 12:30pm
Office Hours: 8:00am- 4:00pm
Playgrounds open at 8:25am. There is no supervision for students who arrive earlier than 8:25am. Unless they are attending a school activity, students should not arrive at school before 8:25am.
Can I walk my kids into school?
You are welcome to walk your kids to the playground gate. If you do so, please do not park in the teacher parking lots. If you wish to walk your child to the gates, please park in the neighborhood and walk to the school. Make sure to use designated crosswalks and be safe!
Where do I drop off my kids in the morning and pick them up?
Depends on what grade they are in. Detailed arrival/dismissal procedures are available on the Sonoran Sky website.
Generally, 1st – 6th grade students are to be dropped off in the flow-zone along the large field on 75th Street. The playground gate opens at 8:25am and closes promptly at 8:45am. Students begin lining up at 8:40am.
All kindergarten students and their siblings are dropped off in the northeast parking lot that you enter off of Sweetwater. Traffic flows counter-clockwise in the morning. After drop-off, students head directly through the gate to the kindergarten playground.
Please do not park in the teacher parking lots. If you wish to walk your child to the gates, please park in the neighborhood and walk to the school. Make sure to use designated crosswalks and be safe!
I need to pick up my child early, what is the procedure?
If parents wish to pick up their students from school early, they must be signed out through the front office. Only people listed on the emergency card are allowed to check students out; identification will be required. Signing out a student early may affect attendance. Students will not be called out of class until the person picking them up is in the front office.
My child has food allergies, how does the school handle this issue?
Each situation is slightly different and our school works with families to ensure students have the safest and best possible learning environment. Please notify the school nurse of any chronic illness and special health needs.
My child has medical needs during school hours. What do I need to do?
Please contact the school nurse directly to discuss.
Can I visit my child’s classroom during school hours?
We welcome visitors at Sonoran Sky, however, unannounced classroom visits can be disruptive to the whole class. Please check with your child’s teacher before visiting or volunteering to schedule a time that will not distract from the learning environment. Please do not enter the classrooms before 9am. Morning volunteers will be permitted to proceed to classrooms at 9am. If you want to surprise your child with a visit, consider coming for lunch! (Please note, the preceding paragraph described our volunteer policy as it existed prior to Friday, March 13, 2020. Our usual procedures for volunteers may look a little different this year in response to Covid-19.)
Can I have lunch with my child?
Absolutely! Parents and guardians are free to visit their children during lunch time – just check in at the front desk first. You’ll be allowed back to the cafeteria when your child’s lunch begins. If you plan to go onto the field during lunch recess you will be given a vest to help our staff recognize that you have signed in at the office. Check the cafeteria schedule to know when your child has lunch. (You know the refrain by now - the preceding paragraph is based on the pre-Covid world, we do not know yet how this policy may be impacted.)
Will we have an opportunity to meet our child’s teacher before the school year begins?
We're planning a Meet the Teacher event August 4th at 8:00am, during which students and families will have the opportunity to meet their teacher, explore their classroom, and introduce themselves to new friends! However, due to Covid-19 we do need to remain flexible, stay tuned for additional details as we get closer to the event.

How do I join the PTO?
You’re already a member! How cool is that?!! There are no membership fees to join the SSKY PTO; therefore every parent and guardian of every student is automatically a member with an equal voice in our direction
Is there a membership fee?
Absolutely not! If you are a parent, guardian, or caregiver – YOU ARE ALREADY A MEMBER! WOO HOO! Like all public schools in Arizona, we do rely heavily on the generous financial support of our community, and if you are in a position to give, it is greatly appreciated; but, never a condition of participation in your PTO.
Where do I find a calendar of school holiday and vacation days?
A schedule of District holidays, early release days, and vacations is located here.
You can view Sonoran Sky’s Community Calendar here.
